A brave train staff member who intervened to protect passengers during a multiple stabbing attack on a express train has suffered life-threatening injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows the staff member trying to stop the attacker as the train journeyed between a city and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied passengers running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from medical care.
A witness recorded the individual waving a large knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose family are being assisted by specialist personnel,” stated a senior police official.
Rail associations were quick to praise staff and call for more action. One labor leader stated he would be “requesting urgent meetings with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the best available support, tools and effective procedures in operation”.
Another association representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to move quickly to review security, to help the impacted employees, and to ensure that no incident like this happens again”.
The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not halt the train in the center of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the emergency services to access, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” stated a association official.
Police stated they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first wondering if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was real.
Authorities have confirmed there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to come forward with any additional details.
Rail operations on the affected line are expected to experience delays until Monday, with travelers recommended to postpone their travel where feasible.
